OCTOBER SAVES GOALIE CHALLENGE

Sign up Donate

October Saves is a volunteer organization that began in 2014 with the purpose of raising money for a future without cancer. The concept is simple. During Breast Cancer Awareness month (October), goalies of all ages and skill levels across Canada fundraise for each save they make during October, with the opportunity to earn great prizes!

Funds raised will support the Canadian Cancer Society.  Our work depends on you. Make a difference by turning your SAVES into fundraisers to help raise awareness and funds for our cause.

Fundraising is easy. Create a personal fundraiser in just a few steps:

  1. Create a fundraiser.
  2. Set a goal and customize your fundraising page.
  3. Invite your friends to join your team.
  4. Spread the word and invite people to donate!

Meet Melanie

"I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the end of 2019, at the age of 34. My children, Elli and Rieker, were 8 and 6 at the time, and immediately ready to help me battle this terrible disease. They were willing to do anything to protect my health as we entered the pandemic, and I was going through chemo, radiation and surgeries at the height of Covid.

Unfortunately for Rieker, this meant giving up his true passion - hockey. He took a break from playing in the season that started fall of 2020, because he understood that I could not risk catching Covid. He never once complained.

When we learned about October Saves last year, in Rieker's second year of playing rep as a goalie, we knew immediately we wanted to get involved. We ordered a pink jersey and hockey tape, set up our page, and started fundraising. I could have never imagined the support we would receive. Immediately, Rieker's goalie partner Max, raised his hand to help fundraise, and registered. It was so touching to see him on the ice, in a pink jersey, with "Coach Mel" on his chest. The entire U11 Kitchener Jr. Rangers Red team rallied around their goalies, with many families making donations to support. We are so lucky to be part of the best hockey family.

Rieker and Max ended up raising over $2,000 and making over 150 saves in the month of October. As a coach, I couldn't be more proud of the heart they show. As Rieker's mom, my heart swells with pride as I watch him raise funds and awareness for an organization that helped me battle cancer. Rieker will be back on the ice in pink this season, but this time, he's excited to wear his official October Saves jersey."

Meet Bianca

"October Saves came to us at the most opportune time given my mastectomy was in July and chemo began in September. I noticed my goalie, 11 year old (at the time) Sebastian, was struggling with how to react to the news and seeing his mom not well for days at a time was causing him stress. October Saves was a positive outlet for him and my friends and his school rallied around him. He wore pink and to this day has kept the pink hockey tape on his paddle! The new skates he won from fundraising are such an extra added bonus given how much being a goalie parent costs.

Thanks to all the volunteers that put this event together every year and to the Cancer Society! Yours, Bianca and Sebastian (and Finn (other son) and Evan (husband/dad)"
