U10/U12/U13/U14/U15 AAA Pete's Pink in the Rink/Hockey Battles Cancer
From January 27th - 29, 2023, the U10/U13/U14 and U15 AAA Pete’s will be supporting the U12 AAA Pete’s fundraiser and taking to the ice to raise funds and awareness for Metastatic Breast Cancer for the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS). As you know, this cause is near and dear to our hearts and specialized research into metastatic cancer is so needed.
This fundraiser is in memory of Melissa Hinze, who lost her battle to this disease in the spring of 2022. She was the person who began this fundraiser last year in hopes that more funds were raised for metastatic breast cancer research.
The U10/U12/U13/U14 and U15AAA Pete’s are proud to support CCS since on average, 78 Canadian women are diagnosed with breast cancer every day. Thanks to generous donors, the Canadian Cancer Society has been able to invest $44.36 million into metastatic cancer research over the last 5 years while helping to enhance the quality of life for those living with this type of cancer but there is still much more work to be done.
We understand that the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted all facets of cancer care across Canada and worldwide, with the long-term impacts on people facing cancer, their caregivers and healthcare providers yet to be fully realized. It has strained our health system and laid bare its many gaps and vulnerabilities. From delayed cancer screenings to suspended clinical trials, the fallout from pandemic disruptions may be felt by people in our health system for years to come, and the healthcare system will need to contend with a surge in cancer diagnoses now that screening services have resumed, many at an advanced stage. This surge of later-stage cancer cases may impact mortality and survival.
With your help, these youth Peterborough Pete’s teams can surpass the $3,186.30 raised last year and help Canada's top researchers as they focus to improve treatments and cancer screening. We are excited that the players will have their sticks taped pink as well as sporting pink laces for the game.
Metastatic breast cancer
Canadians living with metastatic breast cancer are on lifelong treatments, often with debilitating side effects, that take a physical and emotional toll on them and their loved ones.
In 2022, it is estimated that 28,900 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in Canada.
- About 20% of those diagnosed with breast cancer will have it metastasize
- About 5% of breast cancers are diagnosed at Stage IV or after they have metastasized
In 2021 The Canadian Cancer Society invested almost $3 million into 15 metastatic breast cancer research projects. One such project by Dr Sonia del Rincón studies how two proteins called MNK1 and MNK2 communicate and work with other proteins and cells in the tumour to drive the spread of breast cancer. This advances the understanding of how the cancer spreads and how to target it more effectively. With clinical trials already underway to test drugs that target MNK1/2 in people with metastatic breast cancer, this work could identify new treatment approaches that enhance the effectiveness of these drugs, helping people live longer.
Thank you for giving hope to people living with metastatic breast cancer.
